A QUICK VISIT WITH BILLY THE KID

State 47 Las Cruces Marathon: Las Cruces, New Mexico, January 6, 2024 – Marathon #41

My first marathon of the year was a good one, weather-wise, but I didn’t hit the time I was hoping for. I took a few weeks off to move—sold my house—and I definitely felt every mile I didn’t run.

That said, New Mexico was absolutely beautiful. I didn’t get to spend a lot of time there, but one thing that stood out to me was how kind everyone I met was. It was incredibly refreshing to be surrounded by such respectful, helpful people—especially the younger folks. I did get a chance to visit Mesilla, where Billy the Kid was from, and I also drove through some stunning mountains. The scenery alone was worth the trip.

It’s hard to believe I only have 8 states left to complete my first running goal. Next up, I’ll be in Baton Rouge, Louisiana next weekend, and then I’ll find a few more marathons between now and my Atlanta, Georgia marathon at the end of February. I’m sure I’ll be digging for races in March and April, but in May, I have a marathon every weekend. My 50th state will be Colorado, where I’ll be running in Estes Park—I can’t wait for that!

Here’s to another great year of running and knocking down those goals!
