BACK IN THE SOUTH

Big Beach Marathon: Gulf Shores, Alabama, January 29, 2023 – Marathon #7

Back in the South at the end of January, and let me tell you, I’m not mad about it at all. I chose the Big Beach Marathon in Gulf Shores because I had heard so much about how beautiful it is there, and I was excited to see it for myself. When I decided to run a marathon in every state, I promised myself I’d be intentional about where I ran. I didn’t want to just check off states—I wanted to make sure I was experiencing the beauty of each place. I’ve made it a point to pick races that take me through scenic areas, not loops around parking lots or tracks.

I stayed at another gorgeous Hilton hotel, which was perfect since I’m a Hilton Honors member. The points really help me get extra perks and save money while traveling. I woke up to the sound of waves hitting the beach and the sun peeking over the horizon. It was such a peaceful way to start the day—truly beautiful.

One thing I’ve started doing when I travel for races is to take on all the challenge races the event offers. It’s fun to see the look on my grandkids’ faces when I pick them up from the airport, wearing multiple medals. They think their grandma is famous, and honestly, it’s a pretty cute feeling! This weekend, I ran the 7K, where I placed 2nd in my age group, and then the marathon the next day.

The marathon course itself was gorgeous. It took us along beaches, winding paths, and through the city, offering a little bit of everything. The setting was just perfect. The night before the marathon, I visited a local spot called Tacky Jack’s Grill & Tavern. It’s a fun, family-friendly place that’s famous for its Tacky Shrimp and Bloody Marys. Great food, great atmosphere—definitely a highlight of the trip.

Gulf Shores was a fantastic destination, and I’d absolutely go back. Between the race, the beach, and the great local spots, it was everything I hoped for and more. Another marathon down, another beautiful memory made!
